Eight Days Through Yunnan, Built for Muslim Travellers
Most first-time visitors to Yunnan worry about the same three things: whether they can eat properly, where they will pray, and whether anyone will understand what they need. We built this trip to remove all three worries before you board the plane.
Over eight days you travel from Kunming's stone forests to the Tibetan plateau at Shangri-La (3,200 m) — through Dali's Bai villages and Lijiang's Naxi old town — in a private car with your own English-speaking guide. Every restaurant on the route is halal and vetted by us, and every day is planned around prayer times.
Yunnan has one of the largest Hui Muslim communities in China, so this is easier here than almost anywhere else in the country — but it still takes someone who knows the ground. This is a sample itinerary: we tailor the days, activities and hotels to your dates and pace.
| Day | Where | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Kunming | Naigu Stone Forest, Yuantong Temple |
| 3 | Dali | Erhai Lake, flower cake making, mosque and halal quarter |
| 4–5 | Lijiang | Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Blue Moon Valley, Naxi shaman, Lijiang Old Town |
| 6–8 | Shangri-La | Tiger Leaping Gorge, Dukezong Old Town, Songzanlin Lamasery, Pudacuo National Park |

Tour 'Wow' Points
Ride a cable car to 4,680 m on Jade Dragon Snow Mountain
The highest point of the trip. Warm layers and oxygen are provided, and your guide will pace it with you — turning back at any point is never a problem.

Walk the quiet side of the Stone Forest
We use the Naigu section rather than the crowded main Shilin site, so you move through 270-million-year-old karst in near-silence. About 2 km, all on paved paths.
Cook a Bai flower cake above Erhai Lake
Learn to make Dali's signature rose-petal pastry at a working flower farm, then eat it warm with flower tea looking out at the Cangshan range.

Eat through Dali's North Gate Market
Pea porridge, flaky po-su baba, crispy fried tofu, carved plums — the fastest way to understand what Bai people actually eat. Your guide handles all ordering.

Share butter tea with a Tibetan monk in his own room
Inside the residential quarters of Songzanlin Monastery, which tour groups never enter. This is arranged through our own contacts and cannot be booked elsewhere.

Meet a Naxi dongba at home
The shamans created one of the world's few living pictographic scripts. Learn a few characters and hear how this culture has held on for 800 years.

Stand above Tiger Leaping Gorge
3,000 m walls on both sides and the Jinsha River thundering through a gap small enough to leap across.

Pray at real mosques, not hotel rooms
Kunming's historic mosques, the Hui quarters around Dali, and Shangri-La's old town are all on the route. Your car is private, so stopping when you need to is never a problem.
Optional: step back in time at Yunnan's hidden villages
Add Shaxi, the ancient Tea Horse Road market town, and visit a Bai singer's home for traditional melodies and a folk dance.

Why Travel With Trace East
We are a Yunnan-based operator, not a reseller. Every guide, driver and kitchen on this route is someone we work with regularly — which is also how we can promise you a halal meal and a mosque at every stop.
Suggested Itinerary
Here is a suggested itinerary. Tell us what you would change — this is a starting point, not a fixed package.
Our guide meets you in the arrivals hall with your name on a board and a private car outside. Kunming sits at 1,900 m, so we keep the first evening free — no activities, no pressure.
Your hotel is near the city's Hui quarter, with halal restaurants within walking distance and a mosque a few minutes away.
An early start gets you to the Naigu Stone Forest before the tour buses. Naigu is quieter than the famous Shilin site and, in our view, stranger and more beautiful — limestone pinnacles packed so tightly you walk through corridors between them. About 2 km of easy walking, mostly on paved paths.
Back in the city, visit Yuantong Temple, a 1,200-year-old Buddhist temple built into a hillside, and walk the surrounding garden where Kunming residents spend their afternoons.
Morning bullet train to Dali (about two hours, first-class seat). A private guide and driver meet you at Dali station.
In the afternoon, drive along Erhai Lake to the stretch locals call "Dali's Santorini" — whitewashed villages on the water with the Cangshan mountains behind. Then, at a working flower farm, learn to make the flower cakes Dali is famous for: rose-petal filling wrapped in pastry, baked and eaten warm with flower tea.
Dali's old town has mosques and several halal restaurants run by Hui families who have lived here for generations.
The morning is a guided food walk through Dali's North Gate Market — pea porridge (xidoufen), flaky po-su baba, crispy fried tofu, carved plums. Your guide handles all ordering.
Then a Three-Course Tea ceremony — a bitter-sweet-aftertaste ritual recognised as national intangible heritage. Lunch is in a courtyard restaurant serving classic Bai dishes.
Private transfer to Lijiang in the afternoon. Walking into Lijiang Old Town at dusk, canals lit and Naxi music drifting from doorways, is the moment most guests remember afterwards.
Today is the highest point of the trip. A cable car lifts you to the Glacier Park at 4,680 m on Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. The air is thin — we bring oxygen, we walk slowly, and your guide will turn back with you at any point without question.
At the foot of the mountain is the Blue Moon Valley, where the water runs an almost unnatural copper-blue.
In the afternoon, spend time with a Naxi dongba — the shamans who created one of the world's few living pictographic scripts. You will learn a few characters and hear how this culture has held on.
Private transfer north, with a stop at Tiger Leaping Gorge — 3,000 m walls on both sides and the Jinsha River thundering through a gap small enough to leap across.
You climb to Shangri-La at 3,200 m, so the afternoon is deliberately slow: a walk through Dukezong Old Town with its golden prayer wheels and five-colour flags, then a handmade Tibetan bracelet workshop — pick your gemstones, learn what they mean, make your own.
Dinner is in the courtyard of the century-old Tusi Mansion, followed by the local circle dance on Sifang Square. Join in or watch — both are fine.
Songzanlin Lamasery is Yunnan's largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery — 400 monks, golden roofs in the Tibetan style. We take you beyond the tourist halls into the monks' residential quarters, where you sit down over butter tea and talk.
Afternoon at Pudacuo National Park: lakes, spruce forest and open marsh at 3,500 m, with the option to walk rather than take the shuttle.
Free morning in Dukezong Old Town before your private transfer to the airport or railway station.
Halal-Friendly Yunnan Tour: Food, Prayer and Hotels
Yunnan is one of the most Muslim-friendly provinces in China. It is home to one of the country's largest Hui Muslim communities — Kunming has mosques with centuries of history, and Hui quarters and markets operate across Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-La. The food and the prayer facilities exist. Knowing which ones, in a country where almost nobody speaks your language, is the part we handle.
- Halal every meal, every city. We do not send you to "vegetarian-friendly" restaurants and hope for the best. Every lunch and dinner on this itinerary is halal, and hotel breakfasts are arranged with halal options.
- We send you the list before you book. Ask us and we will send the specific restaurants and mosques for your travel dates up front. You will know exactly where you are eating and praying each day — not on arrival, not "we'll figure it out".
- Prayer built into the schedule. We plan the day around prayer times rather than the other way round. Your car is private, so stopping when you need to is never a problem.
- Female guide and driver on request — tell us in advance and we assign them for the whole trip, at no extra charge.
- Ramadan travel. We shorten the daytime programme, return you to the hotel before Maghrib, and arrange suhoor and iftar with halal restaurants.
- Alcohol-free by default. We do not include alcohol in meals and will not take you to drinking venues unless you ask.
